Interactive Futures’09 Critique
From the numerous and awesome new media artists at IF’09, I chose to critique Willy Le Maitre. I was intrigued with his creation of virtual landscapes, his use of symbolism, and his background as a painter. Here is a youtube video that is similar to the VIVO presentation, but without the 3D glasses.

cool flash sites
I find the work by dZinenmOtion.com really inspiring. The designer, Rose Pietrovovito designed the website for L’Oreille, that won the 2009 gold medal at the Clio and Cannes Lion Awards. I thought L’Orielle was great because of the nostalgic collaged images she incorporated, and the specific flash motions and actions applied to them. Flash gives the work a surreal but believable effect. The old window frames make an ideal border for the flash files and videos. The sound is incorporated into each page and is related to the content and adds to the effect of the moving images. This site contains a lot of information, but it is organized in a logical way and easy to navigate through.
Another Flash site I found amazing was the webpage for Checkland Kindleysides, design consultants in the UK. Their webpage won a Webby Award for best visual design in 2009. The design is simple and clean with white paper cutouts on a wood surface. Flash is used to animate the paper cutouts and gives a 3 dimensional quality. I like the way they incorporated their animated employee photos into the cutouts. The background music is relaxing and creates a ‘spa’ atmosphere. The whole presentation is beautiful and is meant to create a mood and appeal to your senses.

Flash
My son Callem made these 2 summers ago when he was 11. I think I’ll go to him for help with the flash! PG 13 recommended.

Internship Update
It’s time to update the progress of my internship with Tangible Interactions. Today I met with Ryan from B&B Scale Models, and we went over the topographical image of Tangible Interaction’s park design in preparation to making the polyurethane foam model. I am planning to meet Ryan this coming Monday and document how they make the model. It should be an interesting process, and I will have to elaborate after I see it done.
Alex Beim originally supplied me with an illustrator file of the park, and after omitting all the layers I found that the park topography and trails were embedded together (or at least I couldn’t separate them). To make it easier for B&B to read, I created an image in illustrator that separated the park topography and trails. This was good practice with the pen tool! Alex also supplied me with a Park Grading Plan that B&B may be able to use to get additional topographical information.
Once the model is made, I will be responsible for spray painting it and putting all the elements into it. Should be finicky but fun. I checked out Michael’s Crafts and they seem to carry most of the supplies that I need to make the park surface elements, such as miniature wooden shapes, sand, and sculpting materials. I will decide how to proceed with the media after I sort through the images and documentation next week.

DIVA300 Scope of Work Report
DIVA300outline1
Internship with Tangible Interaction Design – Alex Beim
Tangible Interaction Project
TI was commissioned by the City of Richmond to create a design for the Middle Arm Playspace. The design focuses on creating accessible spaces for children of all abilities. The playscape encourages exploration, games, and invention through interaction with objects and obstacles. To facilitate the park design, TI developed a computer program that creates a system of mathematically generated pathways based on local topography. Pathways for the final design were determined based on complexity of the natural topography, and resemble rivers and waterways.
Internship Position
My role will be to create an architectural model that physically represents TI’s playspace. I will be involved with documenting the process of making the model, including it’s design, materials research, and manufacturing process. Photo documentation of the model making process, and a written description of TI’s design process, using the model as a reference, will be used to create a poster or booklet.
To produce the model, I will be working in conjunction with B+B Scale Models Ltd. I will be researching the process, costs, and manufacturing of the model’s topography, and supply B+B with the appropriate files. After an initial discussion with B+B, the model’s approximate size would be about 3’ x 1’, and it will most likely be constructed of urethane foam. I will be adding additional topographical features that will be determined as the project progresses. The project, including model, photography, and design work will be done concurrently at Tangible Interaction studio, ECUAD, and my studio space. I will be working with Alex Beim and will communicate weekly or as needed by email or meetings.
Internship Goals + Wish List
Gain experience with project development and management.
Make useful contacts and gaining communication skills working with community partners and designers.
Design and CS3 experience.
Materials and process experience that can be applied to future projects.
Photographic documentation techniques.
Any additional spontaneous opportunities, possibly including web design and short film production.

SOWR Image

This image relates to my internship project with Tangible Interaction Design in that it emphasizes a process of design evolution. I created the image from a 3D image, based on another image I created. The internship project focuses on creating a model and documenting the process, as well as documenting the process involved in TI’s design.

Wow+Flutter
Onedotzero recently held Wow + Flutter, an exhibition on innovative motion graphics. I haven’t had a chance to view much of it but I found a short film by Belgian artist Jean-Paul Frenay was really amazing.
“Artificial Paradise, Inc is an experimental film anticipating a future where a major corporation has developed an unique software, based on organic virtual reality, which holds all the lost memories of humankind. A user connects to this database of the forgotten…what is he searching for?”

At the Ranch
“It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” ~Mark Twain
There was a petting zoo at the ranch we stopped by last month around Grand Forks. The dog was friends with 2 goats, a miniature horse and donkey, and a lot of geese. They all lived in a cramped space and despite being different species with unique characteristics, they all got along fabulously. I think we have a lot to learn from petting zoo behavior.
